Top Art News Podcasts, Industry Discussions and Other Soundbites

podcast art studio

In the previous blog post I shared top art theory podcasts, this post is dedicated to channels that deliver the art news and other interesting discussion points within the industry.

Art News Podcasts

These podcasts are great to tune in to for some of the most reliable, up-to-date topics that are currently having an impact on the art industry.

The Week in Art

The weekly podcast is an offering from The Art Newspaper that covers current global art news and stories related to the industry.

Expect to hear from leading creative figures and how they are responding to world events and politics; the latest reviews of art exhibitions and events; roundtable conversation between leading art museum directors about the challenges that established institutes face; a breakdown of the latest art fairs; and art market trends.

The Art Angle

Another popular weekly art news podcast is The Art Angle by Artnet News. Episodes cover in depth industry news from museums, galleries and the art market.

Below are some of the recent topics that have been discussed in episodes:

Identity Politics: The discussion looks at the recent change of office in the US and how attitudes towards diversity and identity politics has been affected. They question how to talk about real criticisms of what may have made the social justice culture of the recent past confusing or alienating to many people.

Can Machine Vision Replace Art Expertise?: Jo Lawson-Tancred’s new book A.I. and the Art Market, offers a guide to how machine learning and artificial intelligence are impacting the art market. This discussion focuses on art authentication and, as vast amounts of money can be hinged on the decision of authenticity, can A.I. offer the answer, and can it be trusted?

ArtTactic

The ArtTactic podcast puts a spotlight on the art market focusing on topics such as art investment, the global art industry and interviews with key professionals. These are some of the guests that have featured in recent episodes:

Nicole Sales Giles: The Vice President and Director of Digital Art at Christie’s, discusses the rapidly evolving sector of AI-generated art. Mills Moran: The Co-Founder of Felix Art Fair delves into the Los Angeles art scene and the impact that the recent fires have had on the industry – the galleries, artists, and collectors.

Topical Art World Discussions

A Brush With…

Have you ever wondered what influences other artists? A brush with..., is a podcast by The Art Newspaper, sponsored by Bloomberg Connects. The podcast is hosted by art critic and writer Ben Luke, who is also a contributing editor of The Art Newspaper. Through each episode he interviews some of the most prominent creatives of our time to find out what they do in the studio, what galleries and museums and other sites they keep returning to for inspirations and in general, what makes them tick.  Hear from: Eva Rothschild, Somaya Critchlow, Jeff Wall, Sonia Boyce, Marlene Dumas, Rana Begum, Otobong Nkanga, Yinka Shonibare, Joan Jonas, Ai Weiwei, Sarah Sze, and many others.

The Art World: What If…?!

Leading creators and innovators in the art world reimagine everything in culture. What would be the consequences of changing ‘the system’? The podcast is hosted by world-renowned art advisor Allan Schwartzman and art journalist Charlotte Burns. Although the episodes cover some heavy topics faced by creatives and society as a whole, the style of the shows are also humorous as they lead listeners down winding paths of change. The podcast shakes up the way a person thinks about the ruts that artists and those in the creative world can find themselves, both creatively and systematically.  Some of the influential guests include: MoMA director Glenn Lowry, Guggenheim deputy director Naomi Beckwith, non-profit leader Kemi Ilesanmi, curator Cecilia Alemani and Sandra Jackson-Dumont, the director of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art.

MoMA Magazine

This is not as organized as the other podcasts and channels on the list but it’s been added on the end as there are some interesting ad-hoc conversations on the podcast.

How Can Art Help with Feelings of Grief?:

In this episode Cole Imperi, Emily Price and Arlette Hernandez discuss how three artists – Kay WalkingStick, Georg Kolbe, and Käthe Kollwitz – use their art to document, explore and express their experiences of death, loss and grief. They discuss how creative exploration and art can help people heal and understand the deep impact loss has on bodies, minds, and spirits.

Broken Nature: This four part series, hosted by MoMA senior curator Paola Antonelli, asks guests about the urgent challenges facing the planet. Guests including anthropologists, judges and entrepreneurs, discuss how systems within areas such as fashion, food and law could be changed and redesigned to better support humans, other species and the environment as a whole.
